Oehser brings up a GREAT point Freeney made.
“Next time I might have to take the 15 yards,” Freeney said. “Like I said, It’s funny how it happens with all the rules of avoiding the quarterback, ‘Don’t do this, don’t do that.’ Now, it’s so much built in you. I remember, I was about to hit him, and then I was like, ‘Hold up on him. I don’t know what’s going to happen, it could be close to a gray area.’
“And because I avoided him, I ended up messing myself up. Maybe next time I won’t.”
That quote reads a little worse than Freeney likely meant it. Freeney hardly is a vicious guy, and he’s not talking about taking a cheap blast at an unprotected player with intent to injury. He’s talking about making perhaps incidental contact that in past eras would have been considered part of the play.
