As I was watching the beginning of NBC’s Olympic coverage, the network did a very good job on the death of luge athlete, Nodar Kumaritashvili from the Republic of Georgia. It covered the story from all sides using NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams, featuring interviews with luge analyst Duncan Kennedy and bobsled analyst John Morgan. I give credit to NBC for not shying away from the story and not ignoring it. NBC Olympics primetime host Bob Costas and Today co-host Matt Lauer both mentioned the Opening Ceremony would be dedicated to Kumaritashvili.
When NBC went to break, the local Providence affiliate, WJAR-TV, ran a local ad from Cardi’s Furniture, featuring animation of the three siblings who own the local chain. It featured depictions of Nick, Ron and Pete Cardi sitting in a bobsled. You know where this is going. The bobsled crashed and the three men went over the side. You want to talk about bad timing?
If you’re not aware, Kumaritashvili crashed his sled and he went over the side, hitting his head on a steel post next to the track.
The Cardis should have had this spot pulled. It has run twice already. Here’s hoping it will be pulled as we get further into coverage tonight.
More later.
