The Atlanta Tip-Off Club announced on Monday afternoon that UConn Huskies senior center Tina Charles was the recipient of the 2010 Women’s Naismith Award.
It’s the second straight year that a member of the Huskies has won the award. Junior Maya Moore won the award last season. She also beat out Jayne Appel of Stanford and Kelsey Griffin of Nebraska.
Charles becomes the sixth member of the UConn women’s program to win the award joining Rebecca Lobo, Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi and Moore.
Charles was previously named the 2010 AP & USBWA Women’s Player of the Year as well as being named to the USBWA, AP and State Farm WBCA Coaches All-America First Team.
The voting was determined by the Atlanta Tipoff Club’s national voting academy, comprised of leading basketball journalists, coaches and administrators from around the country, in addition to fan voting via text message, which accounted for 25 percent of the final results – more than any other national college basketball award.
The voters based its criteria on player performances throughout the season. The vote was tabulated and certified by the accounting firm of Habif, Arogeti & Wynne, LLP. HA&W is the largest independent accounting firm in Georgia and one of the top 50 firms in the United States.
