“If you like the way Gary plays…”

Hey…I like the way Gary plays!

“If you like the way Gary plays,” Polian said, “you’ll like the way Pat plays.”

Coach Jim Caldwell described Angerer as a player with “a lot of range (and) great anticipation. He certainly understands defensive concepts extremely well, so we think he’ll be a good fit.”

The Colts locked up Brackett in March, signing him to a five-year, $33 million contract. However, it’s possible he’ll not see the final years of the deal. After base salaries of $800,000 this season and $2 million in 2011, Brackett, 29, is due to earn $5 million in 2012 and $6.6 million in the final two years.

If Brackett’s age or his price tag catch up to him in a few years, Angerer is the heir apparent.

“It’s truly going to be an honor playing for them,” Angerer said. “I can’t wait to get started.”

Angerer is the latest Hawkeye added to the roster, joining tight end Dallas Clark and safety Bob Sanders. He never saw it coming.
