Breakdown
Tom Brandstater is a 2009 sixth round pick out of Fresno State University, where he was a three year starter. Despite the WAC Conference’s generally poor competition-level, Fresno State has a history of developing NFL-caliber quarterbacks.
It was Fresno State’s reputation that helped justify Brandstater’s position as a solid late-round developmental pickup . One of Brandstater’s unique attributes is that he played safety in high school, but found an opportunity to move to quarterback at Fresno State. Brandstater did play quarterback in high school as well, but was used primarily as a component of his school’s rushing attack and less as a passer.
Due to his delayed development, Brandstater lacks many of the ingrained bad habits that characterize numerous college quarterbacks. For example, Brandstater developed in both the shotgun and under center, which allowed him to avoid many of the pitfalls that the spread offense can beset other talents.
Brandstater also developed his throwing motion under superior college-level instruction, allowing him to avoid many of the poor habits lifetime quarterbacks develop. Brandstater has experienced some moderate growing pains during his college career due to his relative inexperience, including a downturn in his senior season — following rapid development during his sophomore to junior years.
Brandstater lacks refinement in some areas, including trouble scanning the field and not staring down his receivers. He also struggles with pass-precision between overlapping coverage, tight spirals, and tends to float passes instead of throwing crisp passes on a line to his receivers.
Brandstater does display a propensity to improve, above-average out-of-pocket” skills, and uncharacteristically strong down-field blocking abilities. He also has sure hands when he breaks out of the pocket, or preforms handoffs — is not afraid of getting hit, and demonstrates the ability to avoid oncoming pass rushers.
Brandstater earned a spot on the Denver Broncos regular roster throughout the 2009 season, but inactive for all 16 games as the 3rd Quarterback on the depth chart. The Colts claimed Bradstater off of waivers the day after he was released in June 2010.
