It’s not just time for college ball, high school football has kicked off as well. Each week tBBC will take a look at one of our commits, what they have done on the season, preview their upcoming game, and give a brief synopsis of what to expect when they get on campus.
The first 2011 commit we look at will be Devin Smith, since I was able to view him this past weekend on FSN Ohio against Canton Glenoak. Boy, the 6’2′ 175lb WR from Massillon Washington didn’t disappoint.
To watch the entire Massillon/GlenOak game – go to Fox Sports Ohio’s video archive and watch Devin Smith in action.
Against Glenoak he had 5 receptions for 116 yds and 2 tds. His second touchdown came on a deep toss where he made an adjustment to come back to the ball to catch a 45 yd td pass. It turned out to be the game winning touchdown. His other touchdown came on slant pattern in which he snatched the ball in stride and showed off his speed to split the defenders up the middle for 43 yds.
For the year he has 12 catches for 266 yds. and 2 tds. He is working to out do his 50 catch, 989 yds, and 15 td Junior year performance. His big game against Glenoak was an encore to week one in which he had 7 catches for 150 yds! Next up will be Stow, where Smith had a big game last year in a 31-14 win; he reached pay dirt twice.
Devin was one of our later offers in the recruiting season, after showing out during advanced summer camp. He is a tremendous prospect. He has the size and speed combination on the outside that you look for, to go along with his good hands. Devin catches it with his hands away from his body, and he looks to go up and get the ball, or attacks it in coming back out of his breaks.
Smith is also a two sport star, as he won the state long jump title last year as a junior, and came close in the high jump. Not stopping there he was the anchor leg in the 4X200 Relay in which his team finished 10th at state. I compare Devin’s game to that of Terry Glenn; just a smooth athlete that looks good in and out of breaks, and catching the ball. Here’s his Scouting Ohio page, for those of you who are into that type of thing.
This is my second time watching Smith, as I saw him last year against Glenville going against Christian Bryant. Here were my comments after that game.
“I was impressed with Smith last night. His ability to get open, and get deep on Bryant. The balls from the Massillon QB were not very well thrown at times, but this kid has the talent and it was evident to see. He is in the conversation as top WR in the state and maybe for an offer”
