Results for the Weak: Week 6

Results for the Weak: Week 6
You just know he's thinking, "It's about time!"

That had to be one of the most satisfying weeks of football to watch. The Buckeyes overtook an overmatched Indiana squad, and afterwards the live blog stayed open so that we could watch MSU and toUSC prevail against their respective foes.

The end result – a #1 AP ranking for the Buckeyes, the first since the end of 2007.

Several other results were equally exciting this weekend.  Oregon State managed to upturn Arizona and Toledo managed…

Well, they managed to score 14 points against Boise State, though only 7 came when it mattered.

Let’s take a look at how the games turned out!

Thursday, October 7th

#7 Nebraska at Kansas State

Final: Nebraska 48, Kansas State 13

Wow, Taylor Martinez looks good.  The redshirt fresman Quarterback for Nebraska exploded on Kansas State to the tune of 5/7 passing for 128 yards (18.3 ypc) and 15 carries for 241 yards (16.1 ypc) for 5 total touchdowns, with 4 of those coming with his feet.  This kid is good, and I’m suddenly not so happy about having to face Nebraska in Lincoln next year.

#11 Arkansas at Texas A&M

Final: Arkansas 24, TAMU 17

Arkansas needed some help at the end and got it in the form of a late interception that allowed them to secure their 7 point victory.  Arkansas is a very good team this season, but they’re going to have to do a lot better or they will fall flat against someone down the stretch.

Toledo at #4 Southern Idaho State

Final: SISU 57, Toledo 14

As I mentioned earlier, Southern Idaho State pounded Toledo in all phases of the game.  So much for SISU pulling a Michigan in this one.

#10 Utah at Iowa State

Final: Utah 68, Iowa State 27

I way overestimated Iowa State’s defense in this one.  Utah came out and made them pay for trying to stand on the same field with them.  If there’s any question about how good Utah has become in the last few seasons, wins like this over BCS caliber opponents should answer it.

Oregon State at #9 Arizona

Final: Oregon State 29, Arizona 27

Hah!  I finally found the upset I was looking for.  Arizona had been looking a little shaky ever since their win over Iowa, and Oregon State was on the verge of greatness more often than not.  It was only a matter of time before they caught a top 10 team napping, and they finally did.

It’s clear that OSU will not challenge for the PAC-10 title again this year, but they’re going to make a fight of it certainly.

It turns out Mali’s pick of Arizona State didn’t hurt him anyway.  Twisters.

USC at #16 Stanford

Final: Stanford 37, USC 35

Stanford needs to get their head on straight again.  They were in control against Oregon, and then blew it in the 2nd half, and they follow that up with this steaming pile.  Stanford needed a last second field goal to escape a weaker-than-usual USC team at home.  That’s not the kind of game you want to see when you’re still trying to make a play for the PAC-10 title.  I think Oregon will have it locked up here shortly.

#12 LSU at #14 Florida

Final: LSU 33, Florida 29

At some point the deal Les Miles made with the devil will come due.  He is 6-0 right now this season and probably deserves to be 3-3 if not worse.  Yet again, he found a way to win in the last seconds of a game, mostly likely despite his best efforts to throw it away.  There’s no question now that Florida is nowhere near where they were last season, and were horribly over ranked early on.

#23 Florida State at #13 Miami

Final: Florida State 45, Miami 17

Well, Florida State became Miami’s Oklahoma.  Recall that Oklahoma trounced Florida State 45-17 earlier this season.  This loss hurts the Buckeye’s quality win quite a bit, and it will be interesting to see how that effects things going forward.  The ultimate question is if people focus on the score difference rather than how Miami scored most of their points.  My guess is that they will.

Looks like FSU is now in the driver’s seat for the ACC championship.

#17 Michigan State at #18 Michigan

Final: Michigan State 34, Michigan 17

DONE.  Michigan State summarily exposed Denard Robinson as the fraud he is.  Now, I will grant you that the first interception in the endzone completely changed the mentality of the game and probably took Robinson out of his element.  It was, however, abundantly clear that the Spartans were ready for him and had the talent to actually attack him like a defense is supposed to.  I have a feeling that Michigan will still find a few wins this season, but the blueprint for stopping this offense is out there now for all to read.

Michigan State’s remaining schedule only includes ranked Iowa (at this point).  With the way they’re playing right now, I would not be surprised to see them go undefeated.  Only time will tell.

#1 Alabama at #19 South Carolina

Final: South Carolina 35, Alabama 21

I will happily say I was wrong about this one.  South Carolina did everything they had to in order to stop Bama’s running game, and they held Ingram and Richardson combined below 100 yards.  Spurrier has to be happy about the play of his team in general.

Heck, at one point early in the game, Garcia was 9/9 passing.  He ended the game 17/20 for 201 yards and 3 touchdowns with only a single interception.  Talk about a great game!  Lattimore also cruised to 93 yards and 2 TD’s on 23 carries.

So how’d we do?

  • Eric: 8-2 (39-19 season)
  • Jeff: 5-5 (37-21)
  • Mali: 6-4 (40-18)
  • Jim: 6-4 (43-15)
  • Joe: 6-4 (43-15)
  • Jay: 6-4 (44-14)

Wow, I finally won a week.  Time for the comeback to start!  Jay continues to lead, failing to gain any separation on Joe and Jim who remained tied just behind him.

I will update the Yahoo Pick ’em as soon as it comes available!

Come back in a couple of days to see our next round of games!
