Breakdown
Kyle DeVan was a three-year starter at center for Oregon State University and was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Washington Redskins. Before signing with the Colts, DeVan played for the Boise Burn of Arena Football League 2 and worked as a substitute teacher. After signing with the Colts he started rotating at right guard with Mike Pollak early in 2009, and eventually won the starting spot by mid-season. DeVan had only seen playing time as Jamey Richard’s replacement in the 2010 season, until he was named the starting left guard in Week 6 against the Washington Redskins. Through the first five weeks of the 2010 season, DeVan had the highest percentage of good blocks by any linemen on the Colts roster.
When he was first coming out of college, he was not highly touted, primarily due to his lack of size. Luckily, the Colts specialize in undersized linemen, and in this system, DeVan got the chance to demonstrate his cerebral knack for the game. Entering the league, DeVan was given high marks for his command of the line, quickness off the line, and for the use of his hands. He was also given good marks for blocking in space, effectively finding the best block to extend runs.
DeVan’s future outlook depends as much on the coaching staff’s commitment to Mike Pollak and Jamey Richard as it does on his performance. Beyond 2010, DeVan is easily one of the Colts top three guards, and with the foggy future concerning Jeff Saturday, he will likely remain on the roster, even if Jacques McClendon develops into a starting center or guard in the future.
