“Thank God Plan A worked out,” Mathis said, smiling.
Had it not, Plans B and C were in place.
Mathis’ first non-NFL option: high school football coach.
“I love football and I wanted to be around it in some fashion,” he said. “High school football, that’s where it’s at for the pure love of the sport. I really would have liked to work with those kids.”
That remains a post-NFL possibility. Mathis took a step in that direction during the offseason when he completed his physical education degree at Alabama A&M. He proudly went through graduation ceremonies at Louis Crews Stadium in May.
