For the third straight season and 44th straight week, the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team finds itself on top of the Associated Press Top 25 poll. But for the first time in 35 weeks, the Huskies aren’t the unanimous No. 1 team.
While the Huskies received 39 first place votes, the Baylor Lady Bears received one first place vote and are the No. 2 women’s basketball team in the land. The Huskies and Lady Bears will meet on November 16th at the XL Center in Hartford, CT in the State Farm Tip-Off Classic.
The Stanford Cardinal, Tennessee Volunteers and Xaiver Musketeers round out the top five.
Joining the Huskies from the Big East are the West Virginia Mountaineers (No. 11), Notre Dame Fighting Irish (No. 12), Georgetown Hoyas (No. 13) and St. John’s Red Storm (No. 14). The DePaul Blue Demons, Rutgers Scarlet Knights and Pittsburgh Panthers are among the other teams receiving votes.
UConn’s schedule for the 2010-11 season includes ten of the teams ranked in the top 25 including five of the top ten teams.
They will play No. 2 Baylor on November 16 as mentioned above. They’ll also play No. 3 Stanford in Palo Alto in December as well as No. 6 Duke at Gampel Pavilion in January of 2011. They’ll play No. 7 Ohio State at Madison Square Garden in December in the Maggie Dixon Classic and will also play No. 10 Oklahoma at the XL Center on Valentine’s Day. The last non-conference team that is ranked the Huskies will play is No. 18 Florida State and that matchup comes in December after final exams at the XL Center.
The Huskies will play each of the ranked Big East teams once with the exception of Notre Dame, who they will play twice.
