While his UConn Huskies football team is preparing for their Tostitos Fiesta Bowl matchup with the Oklahoma Sooners, head coach Randy Edsall’s name is still staying around in the coaching rumors surrounding the head coaching opening with the Miami Hurricanes.
According to the Miami Herald, Edsall is one of three candidates being considered for the position. The others are Temple’s Al Golden and Montreal Alouettes coach Marc Trestman.
As of Friday night, the following names had emerged as leading candidates: Temple University coach Al Golden, Connecticut coach Randy Edsall and Montreal Alouettes coach Marc Trestman.
UM also has been considering Texas Tech coach and former UM assistant Tommy Tuberville, who is still a possibility. Tuberville told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal he is not a candidate but did talk to Miami. However, friends said he has expressed interest in the job.
Multiple sources said Miami went into Friday evening considering those candidates, with a decision expected in the next few days. If UM president Donna Shalala, athletic director Kirby Hocutt and top trustees do not agree on a choice, it’s possible other names could be considered.
Edsall’s name was briefly mentioned when former Hurricanes coach Randy Shannon was canned. But it popped again on Thursday in a report from the Miami Herald that they had met with Edsall about their opening. Edsall has not publicly said anything about the opening with “The U” and I wouldn’t expect him to.
The last thing the Huskies need right now is another distraction before the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.
They had their fair share of them during the season that almost cost them said season. They’ve recently been dealing with the arrest of freshman offensive lineman Greg McKee on child pornography charges and now they’ll have to deal with Edsall’s name being thrown out there for a head coaching spot.
I’ve already spelled out why I think Edsall should stay so there’s no reason to rehash that again but the good thing is from the latest Miami Herald report, it looks like they want to get this done quickly. Whether or not, it turns out to be a good thing or not for the Huskies, it hopefully will be over soon and the program can either move forward with Edsall at the helm or having to start their own coaching search.
Let’s just hope it’s the previous and not the latter.
