Phil B on Collie

Some fans have asked if Collie was rushed back to play at New England after his first concussion on Nov. 7. He played well in a quarter and change, five catches for 60 yards, but suffered what the team called a recurrence. If this team was up front about injuries all the time, I wouldn’t question this for a second. But I know a doctor with whom I consult from time to time to understand medical issues. I thought it important to ask about this after Monday, when Colts coach Jim Caldwell couldn’t explain to us when asked if Collie had suffered three concussions or two.

Here is what I’m hearing. It’s basically three shots to the head, three concussions. To hear it explained in general terms, say a guy gets hit in the arm and suffers a bruise. A week or two later, he gets hit in the arm again and suffers another bruise. That’s two bruises, not one bruise and a recurrence, I’m told. So while I’m sure the Colts or other medical professionals out there could argue with my reliable source, and throw terms out there that are clever that I don’t have a clue about, my source’s explanation makes sense to me
