Recruiting Update: 4/27/11

Recruiting Update: 4/27/11
The 2011 class was well represented (L to R: Nick Vannett, Tony Underwood, Doran Grant, Kenny Hayes, Curtis Grant, Evan Spencer, Conner Crowell, Michael Bennett) at the spring game, but the 2012 class appears to be on hold. Here's hoping for some positive action during camps this summer.

With Ohio State’s NCAA hearing scheduled for August 12th, Buckeye fans are in for a long and uncertain summer. Barring any impact the negative press may have on recruiting, fans can at least hope for good news for the 2012 class in the coming weeks and months (Frank Epitropoulos’ commitment yesterday was a nice starter).

The news won’t really start picking up until camps this summer, but there have been several new offers since our last big board update.

In what is becoming a clear trend, the Buckeyes recently offered several additional prospects at receiver, and it is clear that the staff is planning on taking at least two players there this year.

For the latest updates on all of Ohio State’s targets and verbal offers in the 2012 class, remember to check out the links on our 2012 big board.

For the newest offers and players that have been dropped from the board, as well as some general recruiting buzz

New Offers

Kwinton Smith (WR)

Highlights

6’4″ 195 lbs.

Dillon (SC) HS

Another tall, rangy receiver. There is no indication that he has any early interest in Ohio State despite receiving an offer.

Amari Cooper (WR)

Highlights

6’2″ 180 lbs.

Miami (FL) Northwestern

Cooper has great quickness off the line of scrimmage and is tremendous at separating from the defender. He hopes to visit Ohio State in the future.

Demetrious Cox (S)

Highlights

6’1″ 185 lbs.

Jeanette (PA) HS

Same high school as Terrelle Pryor (maybe you’ve heard of him?) and Jordan Hall. He was at the spring game and “loved” it. Ohio State is clearly in the running at this point, if not the early favorite.

Nelson Agholor (ATH)

Highlights (#2)

6’1″ 185 lbs.

Tampa (FL) Berkeley Preps

Agholor is listed as a safety by some recruiting sites, but he has tremendous speed and is explosive on offense as well. It is too early to tell if he has interest in Ohio State-which usually isn’t a great sign.

Buzz

Rumors are swirling that OH RB and Ohio State commit Brionte Dunn has reopened his recruitment. Ohio State’s staff always encourages players to look around. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t. According to this, he remains committed to Ohio State, but he has been and will continue to look around to make sure he is making the correct decision.

OH OL Kyle Dodson will receive an offer from Ohio State when he receives a satisfactory ACT score.

GA WR Jaquay Williams has already visited Ohio State($) and has told the coaching staff he plans to take an official visit to Columbus in the future. Unlike a lot of the southern prospects with early offers, it appears Ohio State has a legitimate shot at landing Williams. This would obviously be an outstanding get at WR for the Buckeyes, and I would say he is the #1 target at WR right now.

FL OL Evan Goodman is another southern prospect that has serious interest($) in the Buckeyes. He hopes to camp in Columbus.

FL DB T.J. Davis was one of the earliest players to receive an offer from the Buckeyes in the 2012 class. There hasn’t been much in the way of Buckeye news from him thus far, but he will try to camp in Columbus($) this summer. If he makes it, that will obviously be a positive sign.

OH DL Se’Von Pittman(Canton McKinley) was at the spring game. He is taking his time in the recruiting process and will likely wait until fall to decide, but Ohio State is still a serious contender.

Recruiting Update: 4/27/11
Se'Von Pittman (L) with his former teammate and current Buckeye Steve Miller (middle).

FL DB Travis Blanks has named Ohio State in his top 7($), but I wouldn’t get your hopes too high on this one. He is almost certainly staying in the SEC.

It looks like another head to head battle between Ohio State and Florida for PA LB Deaysean Rippy, hopefully the results are the same as the last head to head battle for LB Curtis Grant.

OH LB/DE Ifeadi Odenigbo has a top three of Ohio State, Stanford, and Notre Dame, but wants to wait and take more visits over the summer before deciding.

It looks like a two-way battle for OH DE/DT Greg McMullen between Ohio State and Nebraska at this point.

OH DE/LB Adolphus Washington is wide open and won’t decide until the Under Armour Game (which he will be playing in) or signing day. His teammate WR Dwayne Stanford is likely in the same boat.

Those are some highlights. For the latest detailed information on all of the recruits, make sure to check out the BuckeyePlanet Recruiting Page (which is where I get the information from and also where the Big Board links to).

Dropped

Kaleb Ringer

Committed to Michigan as expected.

Ryan Anderson

Unfortunately, Ryan Anderson is dealing with health issues completely outside of football. We wish him the best of luck and a full recovery.
