The main thing that struck me while watching the UFC’s latest video release, UFC: Ultimate Royce Gracie, is just how much of an accidental MMA hero Royce Gracie was. Maybe accidental isn’t the right word, but basically any of the Gracies could have taken Royce’s place in UFC 1 and the results probably would have been the same. Which is more of a compliment to the Gracie family than it is a of Royce’s talents, because as the video shows, the man knew his way around the Octagon.
The other thing that surprised me while watching this release is that it isn’t just a video of all of Gracie’s UFC fights, although they are included. Rather it is a documentary on Royce, which in turn is really a documentary on the sport of mixed martial arts. Multiple Gracies (including of course Royce), authors, UFC stars and cage victims of Royce provide the commentary for the disc, with plenty of fight footage in the mix as well. And at well over five hours of content, this truly is an “ultimate” tribute to the man who helped create the sport that we all love today. MMA fans new and old should definitely give it a view.

And while you’re at it, you might want to get a copy of UFC: Ultimate Heavyweights, which came out a few months back. Two and a half hours of some of the best fights over the past few years from the UFC’s stacked heavyweight division. Plenty of fireworks on this one, plus some hidden gems like Randy Couture vs Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, which I realized was a good fight but didn’t remember just how good it was until I watched it again on this DVD.
