One of the benefits of mixed martial arts being such a new sport is that, unlike other mainstream athletic ventures, it’s pioneers are still walking among us. You can count broadcaster and author Mike Straka in the pioneer group. Billed as “one of the first mainstream journalists to cover MMA”, most MMA fans will know him mostly from his groundbreaking HDNet series Fighting Words with Mike Straka, which is where the inspiration for his new book, Fighting Words: In-Depth Interviews with the Biggest Names in Mixed Martial Arts, comes from.
The book is a recap of his “greatest hits” from the Fighting Wordsshow, but it isn’t soley a question and answer – Straka sheds plenty of background info on each interview subject and describes what issues were at the forefront during the time period the interview took place. Among the sport’s biggest names are included in the book, including Dana White, Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture and Jon Jones. While the book doesn’t contain anything revelatory, it is a fun, quick read, perfect for the summer (we still have a few weeks left of summer, right?!).
