The 0-2 start by the Dallas Mavericks has to be one of the biggest surprises of the young season. Everyone knew the team was weakened with its big losses, but no one expected the defending champs to get blown out in their first two games.
Team leader Dirk Nowitzki says right now the team just looks sluggish.
“We look old, slow and out of shape,” Nowitzki said. “I still think this team has a lot of potential. We just need to work. … We probably needed extra weeks of training camp. But we don’t have it so the young teams, the athletic teams, look better right now than we do.”
I don’t think anyone out there is going to disagree with that. The Mavericks look awful. They knew the risk when they brought in Vince Carter and Lamar Odom and let players like Tyson Chandler, J.J. Barea and Caron Butler go. They were making the team a lot older, and now they’re paying the price.
I knew this was going to be the big issue for the Mavs this season, they’re definitely not a team poised to defend their title. I said before the season that they wouldn’t be and I even tweeted on Christmas that I wouldn’t be surprised to see their team play .500 ball this season.
Only time will tell if they can catch up to some of the “young, athletic teams” but they better do it quick, there’s not as much time to catch up this year.
What do you have to say Spurs fans? Think Dallas will defend their title?
