Ohio State All Time Basketball Tournament

I began a journey to do a comparison of the two greatest teams in Ohio State Basketball history. At first glance it seemed a simple task to pick two teams and write a nice article about who was better at a given skill. The more I read about teams in Buckeye lore, the more I realized I couldn’t write such an article. I had my teams picked out and as things would have it, Joe Dexter and I started brain storming. We came up with the idea of presenting tBBC readers with a challenge.

Ohio State All Time Basketball Tournament
Is the Jerry Lucas Era the best in Ohio State History? It's time to find out your opinion!

Joe and I are going to break the teams down based on certain criteria: Playmaker, Post Presence, Ball handling, Head Coach and we’ll throw in some  other advantages to go with those. We are also planning on having a guest writer or two as we move along through the tourney. We’ll provide you with some stats to chew on between the two teams in each match up.

We had six teams we were going to go with initially and each time we looked at it we knew we had to have eight. Then that turned into nine because we found one more team we felt deserved to be in the tourney. The criteria were simple. Which teams accomplished more for THE Ohio State University were our first choices and then teams that were led by All-time Greats.

  • #1 Seed – 1960 National Champion – John Havlicek
  • #2 Seed 2007 NCAA Finalist – Greg Oden and Mike Conley
  • #3 Seed – 1992 Team – Jim Jackson
  • #4 Seed 1968 NCAA Consi Winner – Bill Hosket
  • #5 Seed 1999 Final Four – Scoonie Penn and Michael Redd
  • #6 Seed 1982 Team – Clark Kellogg
  • #7 Seed 1987 Team – Dennis Hopson
  • #8 Seed 2010 Team – Evan Turner
  • #9 Seed Current Team – Jared Sullinger and Will Buford

I am sure that our fans will not agree with our seeding and that in itself will add to the fuel of the tourney as we move forward. Joe and I honestly believe we put together a great bracket and am looking forward to getting to know all of these teams better. We welcome your comments and suggestions about each match up.

We will be kicking things off soon with the play in-game on Thursday. We felt we needed to have the two most recent teams play in for the #8 seed out of fairness to the teams in the past who have accomplished history. We will even have some match ups that we will provide analysis from What If Sports. Don’t be bashful! You fans are the ones that will help us decide who is the Greatest Team in Buckeye basketball history!

Be prepared, because we will ask for your vote in each round, to get us to the championship game. Make sure you let us know if we’re missing anything as well.

Which great team do you think will make it through the gauntlet unscathed? Stay tuned right here on The Buckeye Battle Cry to find out!
