Now we know why the rumoured Carlos Condit-Nick Diaz rematch is off – Diaz has failed his drug test at UFC 143. The Nevada Athletic Commission announced today that Diaz tested positive for marijuana on the tests administered at last weekend’s event.
Failed drug tests are of course nothing new for Diaz. He failed one (for marijuana) after beating Takanori Gomi at Pride 33 in Los Vegas in 2007. He then skipped a required drug test in 2009 in California for a scheduled fight for Strikeforce and was subsequently not licensed by the California Athletic Commission. Whether marijuana is really a performance enhancing drug (which Diaz claims it is not) is besides the point. Diaz knew that smoking it would cause him to fail the test, and he knew he was going to be tested, yet he still failed. What a dope (pun intended).
