The Austin Toros, otherwise known as the San Antonio Spurs’ D-League little brother, got some fire power back for this weekend’s game against the Texas Legends. Cory Joseph was sent down to Austin when T.J. Ford came back from injury and Eric Dawson rejoined the team after the Spurs didn’t sign him to a second 10-day contract.
Despite the loss, Dawson had a monster game, scoring 24 points and pulling down and 12 rebounds. Joseph came off the bench and scored 12 points and two assists in 26 minutes of play. This game was supposed to feature Dallas Mavericks forward Lamar Odom, who was scheduled to play a one game rehab stint before rejoining the Mavs from a personal leave of absence. However, other injuries caused the Mavs to recall Odom before he could get in some D-League action.
Looking big picture, this Toros teams seems set up to make a nice run moving forward. They recently also added former Hornets and Raptors swingman Julian Wright. The Toros become really deep once Wright, Joseph and Dawson all get used to their teammates.
As for Joseph, I think he’s in the right place. The Toros still run the Spurs’ system and this is the perfect opportunity for him to grow as a ball handler. Hopefully the Spurs stay healthy enough that he can finish the season out in Austin.
