8:30 PM – The OT started out with a Michigan three pointer giving them a three point lead. Another three pointer and Minnesota turnover stretched the Michigan lead to 62-57 at the 2:49 mark of overtime. Minnesota just refused to go away though hitting a couple of threes to slim the Michigan lead to 66-63 with 1:24 to go. In the end, the Gophers’ heart and determination was unable to overcome Trey Burke’s 30 points as Michigan edges out Minnesota 73-59.
7:15 PM – Gary Russell bringing you second half action from Indy. Tim Hardaway Jr. scores Michigan’s first 9 points making the score 29-29 three minutes in. After being tied at the first TV timeout, 3 Minnesota turnovers and 2 Wolverine baskets, Michigan takes a 35-31 lead. The Gophers are able to momentarily hold the surging Hardaway at bay and at the 11:35 TV timeout Michigan hold a 40-37. Michigan was forced to take a timeout after a 7-1 run gave Minnesota a 44-41 lead. Back to back threes stretched Minnesota stretched their lead to 52-45 forcing another Wolverine timeout at 4:59. Novak was able to hit a three with a little over a minute to go to pull Michigan to within three at 56-53. The Wolverines are able to nail a three with 20 seconds to go, tying the game up. The pro-Gopher crowd is unable to will in a last second Minnesota attemp which sent the game into overtime.
6:30 PM – Gary Russell here in Indy updating you on the Michigan-Minnesota game. Neither team coming out of the gate shooting well in the first half. Minnesota does surge ahead at the beginning of the half. The Gophers build a 9-1 about seven minutes in the half thanks to the Wolverines 1 for 5 start from the field. A small run brings Michigan within 5 at the under 4. A Hollins three pointer with a little over a minute left makes it 23-20 Minnesota. The Gophers are unable to cash in on a last second play leaving our score 23-20 Minnesota at the half.
4:20 PM – It was definitely a tale of two halves officiating-wise, with both teams finding themselves in the bonus with just under 5 minutes left in the game. The story for the Badgers in this quarterfinal match up was Wilson who went 7 of 9 from three range including a dagger with 32.7 left. He finished the game making one of two free throws to end with 30 points. Hoosier fans left the arena early in disappointment, but had one of the best crowds so far in the tourney. Wisconsin moves on with the 79-71 victory to face Michigan State in the early semi-final tomorrow at 1:40 PM EST.
3:20 PM – The Indiana and Wisconsin game started out as expected. Both teams traded punches just like in a heavyweight fight. The difference here was the officials letting them get away with some low blows, and the half finished with a total of 7 fouls called between the two. The Badgers were 7/15 from three point range for the first half and caused 6 Indiana turnovers to finish the half up 5 at 36 to 31.
Game 5 Final – #1 Michigan State 92, #8 Iowa 75
2:00 PM – Gary Russell from Indy bringing you a recap of game 1 of the day. Michigan State and Iowa traded baskets through the first half of the opening half with the score tied at 22 at the 10:45 mark. A combination of a hot Sparty and a cold Hawkeye makes the score 49-31 with 2:43 left. A technical foul on McCaffery with 52 seconds left followed by an Iowa buzzer beater leaves us at 55-39 Michigan State at the half. Michigan State comes out in the second continuing to sizzle pushing their lead to 80-53 at the 7:59 mark. Iowa contiues to battle shrinking the lead to 15 with 3 minutes to go in the game but can’t get it any closer. Michigan State finishes the Hawkeyes off 92-75 in game one of day 2.
