After securing the number one seed in the Western Conference for the NBA Finals, the San Antonio Spurs just have two more games before they close out what has been one of their most successful seasons, tying the Miami Heat and the Chicago bulls for top record in the NBA.
For Spurs guard Tony Parker, it signals the start of the real season for the Spurs, and he said on his French radio show (via rmcsport.fr) that the Spurs have everything it takes to win a championship.
I think we have everything needed to win. But there are so many great teams this year: the Lakers and the Thunder in the West, Miami and Chicago in the East. We have to avoid injuries in the playoffs and it would be nice to have a little luck too.
While most would expect a 66-game season to be easier on players because it is 16 games less than the full regular season, a compressed season has meant back-to-backs were the norm and the Spurs even had a pair of back-to-back-to-backs which they swept. In fact the Spurs will end the season in a four games in five nights run.
Parker said the schedule was tough, and after playing 66 games in 120 days, he’s glad the playoffs are within arm’s reach.
While the Spurs have locked up the number one seed with their win against Portland last night, it is still unclear whether they will face Phoenix or Utah in the first round. Parker, however, wasted no time talking about wanting to face off against other Western Conference foes including the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks.
I love playing against the Lakers. Since my first day in San Antonio, the goal has always been to beat them. That’s what the fans want. I love playing against the Mavericks too. They really don’t like us in Dallas (laughs)!
Parker just might get his wish if the Spurs get past the first round, and either team will make a great matchup in the second or third round.
As Parker said, I’m so glad the playoffs are just a few days away.
