The winner of Game 5 in an NBA playoff series usually wins the series 83% of the time. If that’s true, then the San Antonio Spurs’ season is going to come to an end sooner than later.
Tonight, the Spurs lost a heartbreaking Game 5 in San Antonio to the Oklahoma City Thunder (108-103) as the series shifts to OKC for Game 6 as the Thunder are now up 3-2 in the Western Conference Finals.
Aside from Manu Ginobili, most of the Spurs looked flat throughout the game and it wasn’t until the second half of the game did the Spurs show some signs of life. But it was too little, too late.
After the gut-wrenching loss, Tim Duncan is still keeping the faith alive and is confident heading into Game 6 (via Project Spurs’ Paul Garcia).
You got to like Duncan’s confidence despite the huge loss at home. It sends a loud message to the team to not hang their heads low and to get ready for the next game but it’s going to take a lot more than just confidence if the Spurs want to force a Game 7.
First of all the coaching staff has to figure a way to get Tony Parker going. He was the reason the Spurs rattled off 20-wins in a row, had the best Western Conference regular season record, and the Spurs go as TP goes. He played like an MVP candidate for the regular season and for the first two playoff series but has dropped off in the last three games versus OKC. Also, the switch of Thabo Sefolosha on TP has disrupted Parker with his length and perimeter defense.
A close second is that San Antonio’s outside shooters have to get going. Matt Bonner, Gary Neal, Danny Green, and Stephen Jackson have missed the mark in this series. Without these key three-point shooters knocking down shots, San Antonio can’t spread the floor for TD to work or for TP getting into the lane with ease.
There are many more areas the Spurs have to correct ASAP if they want to force a Game 7 in San Antonio (such as everyone stepping up outside of Manu Ginobili) but what about you Spurs fans?
Sure, there were things that worked for San Antonio which gave them a shot to get the win which they can take to OKC but what do you have to say? Do you share TD’s confidence for Game 6? Have you conceded that the Spurs’ season is over after the Game 5 loss?
Let it all out Spurs fans. Just let it all out.
