Spurs inquired about Josh Magette

According to Al.com, the San Antonio Spurs might be interested in University of Alabama at Huntsville JMpoint guard Josh Magette with their 59th second round pick in tonight’s NBA draft.

The article states that Magette was dominating Kentucky first round hopeful Marquis Teague in a drill recently with the Memphis Grizzles, and NBA scouts began to take notice. According to Magette’s college coach, Lennie Acuff, the Spurs were one of the teams who have contacted him about Magette this season.

Acuff said other NBA teams, including the Spurs, Hawks and 76ers, have called to ask about Magette.

Magette isn’t projected to be drafted and Grizzlies head coach Lionel Hollins has already given him an invitation to play with the Grizzlies and try to make the team in the Las Vegas Summer League, but if Magette gets drafted tonight, that becomes a totally different story.

According to his college coach, he has some of the skills that translate to the NBA level.

“He’s unbelievably fast and quick with the ball,” Acuff said. “Has unbelievable vision. Awfully, awfully good on the pick-and-roll.”

Magette sounds like a guy who would be on the Spurs’ radar since there’s really not much mention of him by the top draft websites. He stands at 6’1″ and has a small frame at 160 pounds, but after watching his highlight video, I can tell you this kid could be the next Steve Nash. Watch the video and tell me his game doesn’t look like a raw Nash.

I could see the Spurs drafting this kid, inviting him to Vegas to earn a spot on the team, and maybe putting him in Austin with the Toros to learn the system and get into the weight room. But even if this kid isn’t drafted by the Spurs, he’s got a ton of potential.
