While the San Antonio Spurs were largely expected to be a likely landing spot for free agent center Chris Kaman, especially after Indiana re-signed Roy Hibbert, Kaman has decided to stay in the Southwest Division, but instead he’ll be a few hundred miles north of San Antonio playing for the Dallas Mavericks.
Kaman is another player in a line of veteran big men who were linked to the Spurs but passed up on San Antonio to play elsewhere, including Marcus Camby and Rashard Lewis.
While Kaman would have shored up the Spurs front line and would’ve given the team the big man Spurs fans have had at the top of their wishlist, they will be looking at other options, including Brazilian center Rafael Hettsheimeir.
After bringing back their own free agents and the likelihood that DeJuan Blair could be moved soon, the Spurs will have to make signing a center or power forward a priority. There’s a chance Brendan Haywood could be amnestied with Kaman’s arrival and many of us on the Project Spurs staff hope to see Tyrus Thomas bought out by Charlotte.
Alexis Ajinca, Eric Dawson, Alexis Wangmene and Luke Zeller will be on the Spurs’ summer league roster, but they aren’t the caliber of big men the Spurs need at this point.
