Mixed martial arts is about as solitary of a sport as you can find – once that cage door closes, a fighter has no one else to depend on but himself. It is just him (or her) versus their opponent, mano a mano. But while the sport is not a team-based one, that doesn’t mean a fighter does it all on his own – he/she depends greatly on their fight team to train them, coach them, encourage them, push them to their limits. But what if MMA was a team sport (like it was in the old IFL)? What fight team would be the most successful?
To try to answer that question, we are ranking the top ten MMA fight teams, based on the current fighters on the team. We start off with #10: The Blackzilians.
The Blackzilians
Boca Raton, Florida
Head Coach: Mario Sperry
Prominent Fighters:
Rashad Evans – UFC- #2 Ranked Light Heavyweight
Alistair Overeem – UFC – former Strikeforce and DREAM Heavyweight Champion
Vitor Belfort – UFC – #4 Ranked Middleweight
Thiago Silva – UFC
Eddie Alvarez – Bellator – former Bellator Lightweight Champion
If we were ranking MMA fight teams based on their names, The Blackzilians would most definitely come out on top. The name – derived from the large number of African American and Brazilian fighters on the squad – immediately stands out and makes you take notice. But you also can’t discount the talent that this fight team has amassed in its short existence. Rashad Evans, Alistair Overeem, Vitor Belfort and Eddie Alvarez have all held the gold in a major promotion in the past, and all are still within shouting distance of getting another shot at a title. And the way the nascent team is picking up top talent (Belfort just joined up within the past couple of months), The Blackzilians look like they will grow into an even bigger force to be reckoned with in the sport in the days to come.
Honorable Mention: Tristar Gym
