Spurs waive Derrick Byars

Derrick ByarsThe San Antonio Spurs have announced that they have waived forward Derrick Byars.

Byars was signed out of the D-League by the Spurs in late April and played in two games for the Spurs, averaging five points and 5.5 rebounds per game in under 20 minutes.

The 6-7 forward from Vanderbilt played for the Spurs summer league squad and failed to make much of an impact. Back when he was signed, I questioned the Spurs' move in bringing in yet another tweener on a roster full of players who could play at shooting guard and small forward.

With Kawhi Leonard, Danny Green, Stephen Jackson, Matt Bonner, Boris Diaw and Manu Ginobili all able to spend time at small forward, and with the stockpile of guards, the Spurs likely felt he was the odd man out.

This move could also signal the chances that the Spurs want to give James Anderson another shot in training camp after his impressive performance and work ethic in Vegas. It could also be a roster spot-cutting move in case they are looking to bring aboard a big man.

Byars will likely land in another teams' training camp. He hasn't had much success making it past preseason, so hopefully he has better chances this time.
