With the San Antonio Spurs' training camp inching closer, so does the roster as more players get invited to prove they have what it takes to make the squad.
And getting an invite to training camp is forward Wesley Witherspoon.
JUST GOT OFF THE PHONE WITH MY AGENT SAN ANTONIO IT IS FOR TRAINING CAMP IM EXCITED
— Wesley Witherspoon (@Spooooooon11) September 25, 2012
Witherspoon is a 6'9", 212 lbs., small forward and attended Memphis. Last season at Memphis, he averaged 7.2 points, shot 44% from the field, 36.5% from the three-point line, grabbed 3.7 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in 22 minutes per game.
Once again, Witherspoon isn't the big man the team needs. Though he is a forward, he could be training camp fodder to throw at players the team will likely have on the roster. Not only, that he could be sent to the Toros should he impress the coaching staff.
Also getting a look by San Antonio was point guard Diante Garrett.
Want to thanks the San Antonio Spurs for having me out here..
— Diante Garrett (@kingarrett10) September 25, 2012
Garrett is a 6'5", 181 lbs. and played his college basketball at Iowa State. He had a couple of stints overseas playing in the French and Adriatic leagues in 2011-12 with his best season being in France averaging 7.4 points, averaged 55.6% from the field, 2.6 rebounds, and 3.0 assists in 25 games.
Considering the Spurs are stacked at the point guard spot, Garrett won't get a spot on the roster. Moreover, he would just be buried on the bench or sent to Austin.
Overall, these two players would not make the final team roster. Witherspoon will be used to throw a big man at the team's current frontline but i can't see him making the team let alone being a contributor next season.
