The Kansas City Chiefs have signed former University of Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray.
Kansas City signed the former Volunteer following Bray’s surprising NFL Draft free fall. Bray was expected to be a third or fourth round selection in the draft after a breakout season at Tennessee. Bray passed for 3,612 yards and had a 34/12 touchdown to interception ratio. Bray also had a 59.6 completion percentage last season.
Bray will provide solid depth for Kansas City, whose quarterback struggles over the past few seasons have been well-documented. The Chiefs recently acquired San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith, however there is not much reliable depth behind the eight-year veteran.
The next two quarterbacks on the depth chart are Chase Daniel and former Iowa Hawkeye Ricky Stanzi. Daniel has had very minimal regular season NFL experience, while Stanzi, despite being dependable in college, has not thrown a regular season NFL pass.
Bray has the potential to be a solid backup for the Chiefs and will most likely become the second string quarterback behind Smith after the preseason.
As a comparison for Bray, he could fill the role that Kirk Cousins did for the Washington Redskins last season.
When starting quarterback Robert Griffin III went down with an injury late in the season, Washington did not miss a beat with Cousins at the helm, as he led them to a 38-21 victory over the Cleveland Browns.
Bray could end up being a solid option to turn to in the event of an Alex Smith injury, similar to Cousins, and is definitely an excellent acquisition by the Kansas City Chiefs.
