When the topic of best power hitters in MLB gets brought up, many fans will bring up the names of Miguel Cabrera, Robinson Cano and Prince Fielder. Yet neither of those players aren’t currently leading the majors in home runs.
Baltimore Orioles first basemen Chris Davis is with 15 and he’s also driven in 44 runs. He was a top prospect for the Texas Rangers and was acquired in late July in 2011. During the 2012 season he hit 33 home runs and hit .270, his one issue is that he strikes out.
This season he’s shown better plate discipline as he’s walked 24 times compared to 37 in 139 last season. His batting average now is .327, he has an ops of 1.115 and when he’s not hitting the home runs, he’s find the gaps as he’s got 15 doubles so far.
He does have 47 strike outs thus far as well.
Chasing Davis for the home run lead are: Cabrera (14), Justin Upton (14), Edwin Encarnacion (13), Cano (13), and Paul Goldschmidt (12).
In the last week he’s gone 11-27 good for a .407 average, has hit four home runs with seven rbi and seven runs scored, walking twice and striking out seven times.
Davis has found his stride and has become one of the best power hitting first basemen in MLB. While his current streak is not likely to get sustained for the entire season he’ll end up with at least 35 home runs and reach the 100 rbi mark for the first time in his career.
