CLEVELAND – According to media reports, free agent center Andrew Bynum has agreed to a two-year deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Bynum, 25, averaged 18.7 points and 11.8 rebounds and 1.9 blocks with the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2011-12 season before being traded to the Philadelphia 76ers for Dwight Howard and draft picks, chose the Cavaliers over the Dallas Mavericks and Atlanta Hawks.
The deal is worth $24 million, with $6 million guaranteed in the first year along with incentives and a team option for the second year, which helps Cleveland it is pursuit of bringing LeBron James back in 2014.
When healthy, the 7’0 285-pound Bynum is easily one of the NBA’s best big men—if he can find a way to stay healthy—has a natural knack for attacking the rim and grabbing rebounds, two areas that Cleveland sorely lacked at in 2012-13.
Now paired with All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving, Dion Waiters, Jarrett Jack and a suddenly formidable front line that consists of Anderson Varejao(the NBA’s leading rebounder in 2012-13, before going down to injuries), up-and-coming star in Tristan Thompson, newly-acquired forward in Earl Clark and top overall pick Anthony Bennett, Cleveland suddenly has the look of a legitimate playoff contender in 2013-14.
