NFL : Bucs’ Greg Schiano Tops List of Head Coaches On The Hot Seat.

Every season there are several coaches who are for one reason or another, on the hot seat. Some of the entrants on this list are a shock, some of them not so much. You have to look at situations not just on the field, but off of it as well. These are the coaches that need to be put on notice for Week 7 and the rest of the season.

Greg Schiano (Tampa Bay)-The hottest seat of them all. He is 0-5 this season. The Buccaneers have spiraled out of control and it seems like he has lost the locker room. Josh Freeman was jettisoned for Mike Glennon and the team hasn’t performed better under him. Add in the scandal with Freeman and the possible breach of privacy, he is creating more trouble than he is worth.

His coaching style clearly hasn’t translated to the NFL, so is there a reason the Glazer family should keep him?

Gary Kubiak (Houston)-The Texans’ performance throughout the first six weeks is a disappointment to say the least. They were supposed to be the favorites to win the AFC South again. Instead, they are behind the Tennessee Titans and seem to be falling apart at the seams. Matt Schaub has regressed at an alarming rate in Kubiak’s West Coast system that should help a quarterback succeed. Kubiak made a huge mistake by convincing owner Bob McNair to not pursue Peyton Manning in 2012.

If the Texans can’t turn this thing around, Kubiak could very well be out of a job.

Tom Coughlin (Giants)-The Giants have been bad for the entire season. Eli Manning has regressed and has thrown more interceptions than anyone in the league. The receivers have been out of sync with him for the season. Defensively, they are one of the worst in the NFL. It comes down to coaching and Coughlin may have reached the point where players won’t respond to him.

The Mara’s rarely fire anybody, but changes need to be made. If Coughlin stays, his coordinators should be let go so the team can enter next season with a clean slate.

Ron Rivera (Carolina)-Rivera has led his teams to losing seasons in his first two years on the job. They are now 2-3 for this season. The Panthers have a franchise quarterback, Cam Newton, who is not performing up to expectations. The defense has improved a lot from last season. It still hasn’t led to wins. It seems that the team has an inability to finish out close games. General Manager Dave Gettleman didn’t hire Rivera.

He has no obligation to him. GMs like to hire their own coach. Unless, Rivera gets the Panthers into the playoffs, I can’t see him surviving after this season.

Mike Shanahan (Washington)-The Redskins are 1-4 this season. Robert Griffin III is finally starting to get his groove back after a slow start. They are in a weak division, so there is hope for them. However, the defense is horrible, and is the main reason that they are in trouble. No doubt, it has to improve. Otherwise, the defensive coordinator Jim Haslett may be gone before the end of the season.  The Redskins need to let Griffin run the ball more to spread defenses out. The game-planning has led to clashes between Griffin and Shanahan. Dan Snyder will choose his franchise quarterback over a coach who has only one winning season in his tenure with the Redskins.

Shanahan needs to win the division or Snyder may make a coaching change.

There are a few other coaches whose seats are hot at the moment. Mike Munchak, Mike Smith, Rex Ryan, Dennis Allen, Leslie Frazier and Jason Garrett are the other coaches that need to be concerned about their job status. They aren’t in the same danger as the other five. However, they could be terminations if their respective teams don’t turn their seasons around
