Led by superstar forward Carmelo Anthony, the New York Knicks have started their 2013-2014 campaign with a 5-13 record.
The problem with the Knicks is not Mike Woodson as many like to believe. Others love to blame individual players for the losing. Whatever the problem may be, there is only one solution to salvage the season for the Knicks, who will not make a championship run even if they reach the postseason.
This solution is to trade Carmelo Anthony.
At this point an NBA fan is probably thinking, why would anybody trade the best player from a potential playoff team?
The answer is simple. Carmelo is probably going to leave New York during the 2014 free agency period unless the Knick manage to bring in another superstar to play alongside Melo. The organization should attempt to get some value out of their leading scorer, rather than hanging on to a chance he returns to the team as a free agent.
If the Knicks do decide to unload Anthony, they could receive in return some young, talented players that could help to build a solid young core. If they were to receive young talented players, they would have the opportunity to play alongside Tim Hardaway Jr., J.R Smith, and Iman Shumpert.
Finally, the Knicks still will have a forgotten all star on their team in Amar’e Stoudemire. Throughout his tenure in New York, he has always thrived when Carmelo sits, and plays mediocre while Anthony plays.
With Anthony traded away, Stoudemire would have the ability to showcase his all star skills once more.
All in all, the value Carmelo provides is outweighed by the value of trading him since the Knicks are best off collecting young assets because there is a strong chance Carmelo will be leaving New York in the upcoming free agency period.
