Back in 2011, defensive back, Nnamdi Asomugha was one of the NFL’s most desirable free agents. Now he sees his days in the NFL have come to an end.
The veteran cornerback made his announcement Thursday night. Asumugha’s most productive and longtime team came with the Oakland Raiders. Friday he had a press conference in Raiders headquarters where he made his retirement official.
In 2011, Asomugha signed with the Philadelphia Eagles for five years, $60 million, who paid him more than $25 million before releasing him in March.
Later in the year, he signed with the San Francisco 49ers and decided to take a major pay cut by signing a one-year, $1.35 million contract that included another $1.65 million in incentives in the beginning of the season. The 49ers, released him last month after only appearing in three games this season.
Asomugha understands after his 11-years in the NFL this is the right step for him at this time
With the Raiders, Asomugha spent eight NFL seasons and appeared in three straight Pro Bowls from 2008 to 2010. He was a first-round draft pick (31st overall) out of Cal Berkley in 2003.
Asomugha finishes his NFL career with 15 interceptions, 72 passes defended and two sacks.
