The Washington Capitals may not be throwing in the towel as expected after their recent acquisition of Dustin Penner from the Anaheim Ducks. The Ducks received a 4th-round pick for the upcoming 2014 draft which they used to trade for defenseman Stephane Robidas from the Dallas Stars.

Penner is in his ninth season in the NHL and has recorded 13 goals and 32 points in 49 games this season. Washington is currently fourth in the Metropolitan Division and tied with the Detroit Red Wings for the last Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Ducks have also traded goaltender Viktor Fasth to the Edmonton Oilers for a 2014 5th-round draft pick and a 2015 3rd-round pick. Meanwhile, the Oilers have sent goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov to the Minnesota Wild for a 2014 4th-round pick.

With these deals happening one day before the trade deadline, one could only wonder- what are the Anaheim Ducks up to? Could they possibly be looking to retaliate what the St. Louis Blues did last weekend when they acquired Steve Ott and Ryan Miller from the Buffalo Sabres?

Nothing is confirmed yet, but Anaheim could be unloading a few players to make a huge splash before tomorrow’s 3 p.m. deadline. Ryan Kesler and Martin St. Louis could be two possibilities for this team. And with Minnesota already acquiring Bryzgalov, the Ducks may be in line to offer goaltender Martin Brodeur the best chance to win a Stanley Cup before he retires.
