After Rams players Tavon Austin, Stedman Bailey, Jared Cook, Chris Givens and Kenny Britt emerged from the tunnel with their hands raised in a show of Ferguson solidarity, during player introductions before their game against the Oakland Raiders, the NFL has reportedly decided to not punish them.
What was the meaning of this gesture? I’m not armed, DON’T SHOOT!
This symbol of solidarity was done in protest of the grand jury acquittal of Darren Wilson, who is the officer responsible for the shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown in nearby Ferguson, MO.
Jared Cook explained to ESPN.com that “we wanted to come out and show our respect to the protests and the people who have been doing a heck of a job around the world.”
Sunday evening the St. Louis Police Officers Association issued a release indicating that not only were they “profoundly disappointed” by the players’ actions, but also want “the players involved to be disciplined and for the Rams and the NFL to deliver a very public apology.”
According to a report from NFL.com, it seems that the league office isn’t going to impose any penalties on the team or the specific players involved for the gesture of solidarity.
Brian McCarthy, a spokesman for the NFL, issued a statement saying, “we respect and understand the concerns of all individuals who have expressed views on this tragic situation.” #Ferguson
