When last we left Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield, and their group of dwarf companions, they had gone into the lonely mountain in search of the Arkenstone. Bilbo found it, but he also found a big, scaly, angry, smooth talking, fire-breathing dragon by the name of Smaug.
Annoyed by the intrusion of Bilbo and his cohorts and their attempt to kill him, Smaug decides to leave his refuge within the mountain and unleash his fiery wrath on nearby Lake-town. Wait, it gets better – Smaug also tells Bilbo that he has knowledge of the return of somebody named Sauron. Yeah, that’s not at all good to hear.
In this last installment of the Hobbit Trilogy, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, there will be more than just Smaug to contend with. Sauron dispatches an enormous army of Orcs to engage in a surprise attack on The Lonely Mountain.
The fate of Middle Earth stands wavering on the edge of a razor, and the outcome of the inevitable battle hinges on whether the races of Men, Dwarves, and Elves will unite against their common enemy.
Peter Jackson directs the sixth and final film in his series of adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkein’s Middle Earth saga, based on a script written by Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Guillermo del Toro.
Martin Freeman leads a talent laden cast that includes Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Evangeline Lilly, Lee Pace, Luke Evans, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ken Stott, James Nesbitt, Cate Blanchett, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, and Orlando Bloom.
Will the outcome be a decisive victory or a bloody mess? We shall see, when The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies marches into theaters December 17th.
