If you follow this blog long enough you know our buddy Eric (Twitter: @BosBruinsFan) well enough. Anytime you see a photoshop extra awesome there’s a 90% chance he did it. So when Puck Daddy held the Bear Photoshop contest for two tickets and a free DVD about the Boston Bruins Stanley Cup run we placed our bets that Eric would win.
And he did with this beauty.
Sadly, he’s been laid up with a asskicking cold recently and asked if we wanted to go. You could imagine the sacrifice we were making by obliging a friend in this situation. So we thank Eric for the gift and while we apologize at the same time (keep reading).
We got there to find a small but excited crowd outside of the AMC Loews by the Boston Common. Several people brought sticks or other items to get signed but wasn’t to be tonight from the looks of it.
We swear to god Shawn Thornton is somewhere in that mass heap of people.
Highlight of the “red carpet” goes to Andrew Ference and Brad Marchand for arriving at the theater in a pedicab (bicycle taxi) with the Stanley Cup in lap. We wouln’t have expect anything less from Ference. Stud.
We had some trouble getting into the movie since Eric won a contest but transfered the tickets to us. The Bruins reps couldn’t find us under our name or Erics… 15 minutes later we find out it was under Yahoo!’s name.
Before the movie was shown Cam Neely, Brad Marchand, Andrew Ference and Shawn Thornton all got to say a few words. We took video, in which you hear Jon scream “Shawn Thornton is the third greatest NHL player of all time!” Pretty sure Thornton turned beat red. This is becoming a thing between Jon and Thorts, dating back to last summer.
After the jump… Neely, Ference, Marchand and Thornton speak, plus our review…
Audio is a bit low so you might need to crank the speakers.
We were really hoping Thornton’s stand up comedy act would keep going. Also Ference’s interview is almost word for word what he says in the DVD. Funny. Guy knows his material well.
Cam said something about the DVD being less stressful to watch than the actual games. Pretty sure we felt the same ups and downs during the movie as we did during the actual games. It was great.
Our review (without too many spoilers)
The Good:
* Chara said something about having Unfinished Business.
* Thomas stache
* Plenty of Thornton and Thomas interviews for our liking
* The Ference bits are all gold
* Pumping Tires subplot
* Thomas-Price fight
* Ference trolling Lapierre
* Thomas creaming Sedin
* Horton and the Water Bottle of Boston ice
* Thomas explaining his nickname is funny and hella awkward
* Thomas… Thomas… Thomas…
The Bad:
* No Downie sitting alone; plus the Timmy save on Downie wasn’t shown nearly enough
* For some reason Dan Shaughnessy and Bob Ryan — the guys who cover the Bruins like three times a year — got interviewed for the DVD but Haggs, Kalman and Murphy (among some others) were no where to be found. Also, if you’re going with Globe guys, why not Fluto? He fucking covered the team. Shaughnessy and Ryan are the journalism equivalent of the bandwagon fan.
* Not enough Jack
* Ummm… errr… that’s about it
After all that we were let to get our picture taken with the Cup (this is why we’re sorry, Eric). They had a pro there but here are our iPhone pics.
Here’s Jon.
And here’s myself. Silver tastes good. Jon must’ve needed his fix when he took this.
When we got home we told our girlfriends next time they kiss us they’re kissing greatness. Not sure that went over as well as we had hoped.
Here are more pics from the event. Light was low so these are gonna be shitty pics. Oh well.
That’s supposed to be Neely and Ference. Can’t you tell?
We’d make fun of Marchand’s shit but we’re really just glad he showed up wearing one.
All in all it was a fun event and the DVD is good. As Wysh points out, there’s a lot of subplot that didn’t make the cut but overall it’s worth whatever the NHL is charging for it.
So Eric. Thank you and we’re sorry…
