Editorial Note: Jon from Jobberdy donated $50 to our Movember campaign under the guise of having a post written for him when “Hockey Kicks Cancer” launches. Of course I said okay because Jon, Stevie, and Jobberdy are some pretty awesome fucking people. Normally we don’t do this type of thing unless we believe in it and I believe in these guys.
Hockey Kicks Cancer is an annual kickball tournament hosted by Pittsburgh sports bloggers from The PensNation, Jobberdy, and High Heeled Hockey Mom. Our first tournament was held in October 2012 when we were looking for something to do to pass the time during the NHL lockout.
We kicked the idea around of charging people admission and donating the funds to local youth hockey. In the spirit of Hockey Fights Cancer Month, we ended up donating the money to our local chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
The event took off. We had requests to do it again the following year. To date, the event has donated $21,011 to aid in blood cancer research. LLS not only promotes research and educates the public on the effects of blood cancers, but gives money to families to help pay medical co-pays and treatment fees.
The great thing about Hockey Kicks Cancer is that not only have Pittsburgh bloggers shown support and formed teams, but we have received donations from blogs in Philadelphia, New York, and San Jose as well.
Our event will be held this year on July 26th. If you’d like to help and are in the Pittsburgh area, form a team, donate auction items, or just come out and have a great time watching out of shape adults hurt themselves on the kickball field. This year we’re holding a corn-hole tournament in addition to kickball for an entry fee of $10 per team.

All proceeds will be donated to the Western Pennsylvania/West Virginia chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. T-shirt orders will be filled through June 30th at a cost of $18. All shirts will be delivered in July.
