I know Savard’s LTIR status is brought up a lot, so here we go.
Before Free Agency starts in about 45 minutes, lets talk about Savard’s LTIR money.
Teams who have LTIR candidates (Boston, Philly) DO NOT get IR cap relief in the summer, but those teams are given a 10% overage allowance to spend on top of the cap limit. Once Savard qualifies for LTIR, the Bruins can designate him and use his money.
Here’s where it gets tricky. Boston’s management must fit ALL players’ cap hits under the $69M cap by opening night of the regular season, which includes Savard’s $4,027,143. Once Game 1 is finished of the regular season, the Bruins can place Savard on LTIR and use that money. That 4+ million is not automatic off-season relief.
Basically it boils down to this:
Marc Savard, Milan Lucic and Patrice Bergeron all count against the cap on Day 1 and the Bruins need to factor that in. It is Day 2 where they can designate him on LTIR and they can use his money.
S/T to OrangeAndBlackPack.com for breaking down Pronger’s contract so I could steal it and change it to Savard.
