We’ve been hearing for weeks now about how the Lions were finally going to enter the 21st century and get rid of the lame Leaping Leo logo that was a symbol for Detroit’s 50 years of football ineptitude. The old, boring lion silhouette with no detail whatsoever looked more like a baby’s favorite stuffed animal than the badge of an intimidating force on the football field. The Patriots, Buccaneers, and Eagles all have recently updated their logos to a more successful, modern look, leaving the Lions and their sorry excuse for a logo in the dust… but what else is new?
When I first heard about the change, I was completely sold. I would have gone for a whole new expansion team as long as we could keep Calvin Johnson, but I guess a new logo is the next best thing. Besides, what better time to turn a new leaf and move in a different direction than after the first 0-16 season in NFL history? We have a new, young coach with a different philosophy, and it looks like he is doing whatever it takes to get the memory of last season out of the heads of both the players and the fans. I’m all for it.
And then the Lions did what they do best- they failed. They held a press conference today in which they were supposed to unveil the new logo, but the press conference came and went with just more of the same. I guess the logo, pictured above, is slightly different, but you have to look pretty hard to see any legitimate changes. Same colors, same outline, same losing attitude. They added some detail here and there, but it’s certainly not the new direction that I thought it was supposed to be.
Don’t get me wrong; it’s absolutely an upgrade, and I’m sure I’ll buy some new Lions merchandise to burn after we fall behind by 30 points in the first half of the first game of the year. At least it looks like an actual, aggressive lion now rather than just a cowardly lion’s shadow. But I thought the Lions were making the change to get as far away as possible from the organization’s pitiful past. All I’ll see when I watch the Lions next year is the same damn team that couldn’t win a single game.
They should have started from scratch instead of just adding some detail to the old logo that they’ve had for losing season after losing season after losing season. Same old Lions if you ask me.
