If you are completely unfamiliar with the Ed Thomas story, his horrifying murder, and tonight’s ESPN broadcast of his high school football team’s first game since his death, then shame on you and you should probably just X out of this window.
If are familiar with it, then answer this question for me: is it not extremely weird that Ed Thomas’ alleged killer’s little brother, Scott Becker, is still on the football team? Or is it amazing?
You’d think the entire family would be exiled from the town where Ed Thomas was virtually a king. That hasn’t been the case. In fact, it’s the exact opposite. Players, assistant coaches, and Thomas family members have reached out to the Becker family to make them feel welcome. It’s actually a very touching story, but I still find it very weird.
I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve to be on the team, or should be treated poorly because of his older brother’s mistake. I just think it’s weird is all. Or maybe it’s admirable on all cylinders. If it were me, I’d want a fresh start for all the shame I would feel for a brother’s actions, in addition to wanting to rid the town of any memories of how the legendary coach’s life was taken. I would feel utterly embarrassed for what my brother did and I wouldn’t be able to help but feel that every time someone sees me they immediately associate me with Ed Thomas’ murder.
Scott Becker got an interception tonight and when they announced it on ESPN, I couldn’t help but think about his older brother and what he did to Ed Thomas. It’s definitely a bizarre situation and it’s probably more of a testament to how amazingly forgiving and thoughtful Parkersburg, Iowa must be, but to me it’s also extremely odd. And if that offends anyone, welp, I’m sorry.
