Wings Drop the Puck on the New Season Today at 3 PM EST

With all the hoopla about the Lions winning their first game in what felt like a decade, the Pistons new look squad starting training camp, and of course, the Tigers making a run at the AL Central Division with just three games to go, the Detroit Red Wings season kind of jumped out from the dark and yelled, “SURPRISE!”

The Wings will begin their 2009-2010 campaign today at 3 PM EST in Sweden (isn’t that weird!?) against the St. Louis Blues.  The Red Wings went 4-5 during the preseason, but ended strong with a 4-1 win over the reigning champs, Pittsburgh Penguins, and a 6-2 victory against Farjakdlkadslk in Sweden.

Detroit enters the season with their anchors on defense, Chris Osgood and Nicklas Lidstrom a year older, and have lost some key names from a year ago.  However, with Datsyuk, Zetterberg, and Franzen running the show the Red Wings should be able to compete with the upper echelon for yet another year.

Some news sources are counting the Wings out this year, including one that says the Wings will finish 8th in the Western Conference! That’s fine.  What this team needs more probably now than ever, given some of the ages on this team, is people to doubt them and make them want it that much more.  It’s not easy being a Stanley Cup favorite year in and year out, because the pressure and expectations wear on you.  Being the underdog can do good for the Red Wings this year. Osgood and Lidstrom are running out of Stanley Cup opportunities and it’d be amazing to get them at least one more.

So, hockey season is finally back. The puck drops today at 3 PM EST and while you wait for the next hour or so, here are some of the greatest Red Wings goals:

GO WINGS!
