Brandon Inge’s left knee is going under the knife (UPDATE: and right knee)

I think we all saw this coming for Inge.

Around the midway point this season, Inge was diagnosed with microtears in both patella tendons of his knees, but the damage was worse in the left than in his right.  Inge, being the true warrior that he is, fought through it for the rest of the season.

His hitting suffered, just a bit, as a result of the injuries though.  After hitting .268 with 21 HRs and 58 RBIs at the All-Star break, Inge hit .186 during the second half with just 6 HRs.  Jim Leyland kept playing him because of his defense and honestly, how can you bench a guy who is willing to play on two torn knees because he felt he owed it to the city and its fans? And Detroit didn’t have anybody better.

Inge will have the surgery near the end of this month or the beginning of November.  This should allow him enough time to recover to be back in time for the 2010 season.  If I know M-Inge like I think I do, he’ll be standing there at the third base position on Opening Day, whether his knees are 100% or not.

UPDATE:

Apparently both knees will be going under the knife, and the date is November 3rd.
