Thursday Links – Swine Flu Wings, Number 2 Jokes, & Bad White Rappers

  • It’s game night again for the Red Wings. They’re in Edmonton set to drop the puck against Swine Flu. Oh, and some team called the Oilers. Jessie’s got your game preview from the D4L perspective, complete with mask and hand sanitizer. Also, be sure to check out Animal Drew’s pre-game musings at Nightmare on Helm Street. Priceless.
  • So far, Pride of Detroit is very impressed with Jim Schwartz and his willingness to shake things up when something isn’t working. I agree in that regard, but I still think it’s a bit early to think Schwartz’s tenure will yield the sort of success Lions fans have craved for so long. It’s not a knock against Schwartz; other things (Matthew Stafford, for one) have to go right too.
  • The Baseline ponders if Chris Bosh’s free agency stock has dropped at all because of an off year last season. I, for one, would love to see Bosh rocking the Piston whites next season. Him and Charlie V would make a great inside-outside combo at the 4 and 5. If nothing else, the Pistons would lead the NBA in tweets.
  • The preseason NCAA basketball rankings came out yesterday, with Kansas sitting atop both the AP and Coaches polls. Michigan State is sitting pretty at #2, while Michigan is lurking at #15. D4L bragging rights will be determined on January 26 when the Spartans visit Ann Arbor, and again in early March (date TBA) in East Lansing. MSU may be ranked higher right now, but we’ll see who #2 “works for” by the time March rolls around.
  • Apparently the woman that offered sexual favors in exchange for World Series tickets was “just flirting.” The “desperate buxom blonde” was arrested on prostitution charges, but received her wish anyway. A local radio station is hooking her up with Game Three tickets because she is a “humongous Phillies fan.” Yeah… I bet she won’t be the only “humongous” person in the room when she picks up those tickets.  [via The Big Lead]
  • Over at Bless You Boys, Ian brags about his chance to rub some balls in the Tigers clubhouse (sorry Ian, couldn’t resist). I’ve always been curious about this baseball ritual and I was surprised to see how little mud is actually used on each baseball.
  • If you haven’t seen them yet, here are the infamous excerpts from former NBA referee Tom Donaghy’s cancelled book. As revealing as these passages may be, I can’t help but think Donaghy embellishes some of his anecdotes to increase sales and exposure.
  • The Daily Beast has a great list of baseball’s all-time greatest WAGs. There’s some real talent on that team, but how does Anna Benson not make that list? Also, it would have been nice to see the expanded playoff roster. [via Deadspin]

Rob’s Highlight of the Day

This is a new feature I’d like to start in my (hopefully) daily link posts. The inaugural highlight is a good one with Carmelo Anthony posterizing Paul Millsap of the Utah Jazz.

Somehow Josh Smith was awarded NBA.com’s Dunk of the Night, but make no mistake: this was easily the best play in a great night of NBA action. Enjoy that free week of NBA League Pass while you can, I definitely am.
