Wednesday Links – Tennessee Call-girls, Sketchy NHL Contracts, & More Tim Donaghy News

It’s a busy day in the D today. Both the Wings and Pistons are back in action tonight, and the Tigers are shaking things up as well. Be on the lookout for my reaction to the Tigers’ trade later over here.

  • David Cho, writer/publisher of The Awl, takes a look at “the line” from Jay-Z’s hit song Empire State of Mind. The line goes: “If Jeezy’s payin’ LeBron, I’m payin’ Dwyane Wade.” Cho’s analysis on the subject is pretty interesting, though it has a lot less to do with sports than I originally thought. • The New York Times published a story today about the NCAA’s interest in Tennessee’s infamous “recruiting hostesses.” Currently the #4 search topic on Google (an image search was less than impressive), many people are attributing this recent development to the fact that Lane Kiffin has ruffled some higher-up feathers since he became Tennessee’s head coach. Hopefully the NCAA will take this more seriously than their interest in a few extra practice hours for a team that needs it. [via Deadspin]

  • The Big Lead posted its list of 10 bowl games to watch this year. #1 is basically a given, especially when they’ll probably show Colt McCoy’s girlfriend on TV about 1,000 times.

  • Full Court Press, MLive’s Pistons blog, has the details about Tim Donaghy’s statement that Rasheed Wallace was/is “targeted” by NBA officials. I still think Donaghy is doing anything he can for his own publicity, but I will agree that Sheed is under a closer eye than most NBA players. Some of it is deserved, but a lot of players get away with some of the stuff Sheed gets T’d up for.

  • Pierre LeBrun takes a look at a few fishy contract extensions around the NHL. Sound familiar? Maybe its because Kenny Holland patented the idea and other GMs just aren’t as good at disguising their ideas. Hockey Independent offers a bit more analysis and ponders a few possible future beneficiaries of a long-term front-loaded deal.

  • NBA Fanhouse’s newest edition of the Stinkface Chronicles takes a very detailed look at Trevor Ariza’s monster dunk over Chris Kaman, as well as a shoving match between Jermaine O’Neal and Lamar Odom.

Rob’s Highlight of the Day
The dunk? Nice, but nothing special. This gets my vote for highlight of the day for the quick baseline move, the crowd’s reaction, and the rarity of a D-Will throwdown (only 7 flushes for the Utah PG last season). [via Ball Don’t Lie]
