'Tis The (Bowl) Season

FRESNO ST -13 (8-4, 6-2 WAC) VS. WYOMING +13 (6-4, 4-4 MWC)

That magical time of year known as bowl season is finally here. While ol’ Kris Kringle failed to bring us a playoff system to replace that wretched BCS, he did bestow us with some intriguing bowl match-ups. This game is not one of them.

The Wyoming Cowboys, who finished fifth in the less than stellar Mountain West Conference, might be the worst bowl team ever. They possess the nation’s 112th ranked offense and averaged a paltry five points in their six losses. For the Cowboys to have a shot, they’ll need their young and athletic quarterback, Austyn Carta-Samuels, to muster up every ounce of offense he can manage. Oh yeah, and they’ll have to bottle up Fresno State’s rushing attack, which features the nation’s second leading rusher in Ryan Mathews (151 yards per game). I don’t see that happening. The Bulldogs, who lost in this bowl last year, run away with it this time 35-10 and are presented with the illustrious New Mexico Bowl Trophy Urn.

'Tis The (Bowl) Season

UPDATE: In a thrilling finish, Wyoming beat Fresno State 35-28 in the second overtime, thus stomping out my prediction on all accounts. This is exactly why I don’t bet…a lot.
