Wednesday Links – Mike Shanahan Takes Over in Washington, Matt Holliday Re-Signs in St. Louis, Randy Johnson Retires, & Michigan’s New Athletic Director

Yeah, so Kool & the Gang didn’t give us the laughs like Boise State’s cowbell girl, but at least we’re not making fun of blind people this morning. Celebrate by checking out your Wednesday links, or Gilbert Arenas will put a gun in your face. [pic via Ball Don’t Lie]

  • Big news from Arizona: The Big Unit is retiring. Randy Johnson will hang up his spikes after scaring the shit out of hitters for 22 seasons. There’s little question that he’s going to be in the Hall of Fame. If he’s not, he’ll stare down the baseball writers who refused to vote for them until they crack. My favorite Randy Johnson moment is when he made John Kruk pee himself during the 1993 All-Star game.

  • I know it’s early, and I promise to leave the NFL draft alone for a while after this (pending big news), but Todd McShay has released his updated mock draft now that we know what the pick order will be. Check out the video below for his top 5 picks. Turf Show Times, SB Nation’s St. Louis Rams blog, debates whether the Rams should trade the #1 pick.
  • The Chicago Bears took a hint from their buddies in Buffalo and fired several coaches yesterday, including offensive coordinator Ron Turner. Head coach Lovie Smith and head dumbass Rod Marinelli were both retained. I like the move of keeping Smith. He’s done a lot of good things while at the helm in Chicago and deserves another year to develop Jay Cutler. Midway Illustrated, Bloguin’s Bears blog, has all the details in their end-of-season updates.
  • I’m still not sure what to make of this, but ESPN is going 3-D. I’m still not sure how it’s going to work, but if it looks anything like Avatar did, I’m excited. Unfortunately, James Cameron doesn’t work for ESPN, so I’m taking a wait-and-see approach.
  • Holy shit, I need to get a Wii. ESPN reports that EA Sports will make NBA Jam for the Wii some time in the near future. My girlfriend is going to be so pissed. [via NBA Fanhouse]
Rob’s Highlight of the Day
Danilo Galinari of the New York Knicks dunks on Indiana Pacers big man Roy Hibbert. My favorite part is Gallo’s pause after landing, probably because he’s never dunked on anyone before. [via Ball Don’t Lie]
