Johnny Damon to the Tigers?

What up D4L, coming at you live from my parents’ house, recovering from hernia surgery (that means I’m an athlete, right?). It’s been a little while since my last post, but after a few days of Vicodin and creamsicles, I think I’m ready get back on the saddle.

Being home all day long means I get to watch 12 consecutive hours of sports programming–from Mike and Mike in the Morning all the way through PTI. And they all are leaning towards the same sentiment: Johnny Damon may be a Tiger this season.

ESPN’s Jayson Stark reported that the Tigers have offered Damon the most money thus far, somewhere in the $7 million mark a year. Atlanta has offered close to that figure as well. My guess is Damon will sign with the Tigers. Damon’s defense is a liability, and playing for an AL playoff contender where he can DH would suit him much better.

I hope Detroit makes this happen. They were one playoff-play-in game away from winning the Central last season. So what did they do? Traded away arguably their franchise player to build for the future. I’m not saying that I agree or disagree with the trading of Granderson, but regardless, I hate seeing a team so close almost give up on the next season. Signing Damon, who had a higher batting average, on-base percentage and more runs than Granderson, would give Detroit a better leadoff hitter while saving all the money that would have been owed to Granderson. This would justify the Granderson trade and allow the Tigers to play for the future and for the now.
