According to reports, the Lions have traded their 7th round pick in the 2011 draft to San Francisco for QB Shaun Hill. The Niners apparently deemed Hill disposable after signing former first overall choke, er choice, David Carr to compete with in house first rounder Alex Smith.
One team’s trash is another team’s treasure. The Lions, who started free agency with black holes strewn across their roster, are quietly checking off their spring cleaning list. Hill appears to be a more than capable backup to Matt Stafford after going 10-6 as the Niners starting signal caller last season. Shoot, next to Daunte Culpepper and his 0-10 starting stint over the course of two years, Hill looks like the second coming of Drew Brees.
Martin Mayhew got just what the doctor ordered for the Lion’s vacant backup quarterback position. Hill, an eight year veteran, possesses starting experience and a familiarity with Scott Linehan’s offensive system after playing for him in Minnesota. Best of all, all Mayhew had to hand over was a late round pick, a move that is quickly becoming his signature. Don’t look now, but it appears the Lion’s might have found a professional general manager.
Here’s to hoping the Lions pick up some luck of of the Irish this Saint Paddy’s…and we don’t hear Shaun Hill’s name mentioned ever again.
