The Wings jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but as they’ve been prone to do this season, let Edmonton march right back into the game. When the Oilers tied it in the third period, it looked as if the Wings would squander another point and possibly even two. If they lost, it would have been their 12th of the season in collapsing fashion. Luckily, that was not the case.
With just over a minute remaining in the game, Datsyuk lifted a high shot from the point causing Oilers’ goalie Drouin-Deslauriers to ill-advisedly jump in the air. Brad Stuart, who was battling for position in front of the goal, lifted his stick and redirected it down into the ice, between Deslauriers’ legs, and into the net. As you can imagine, Mickey and I went crazy.
Pause.
Realization sets in that Stuart’s stick was pretty high and may have been illegally so. To Toronto those filthy scumbag refs went to review it because upon it did appear that Stuart high-sticked the puck (bad photo above), which if true would render the goal void. Now, I don’t know if that’s really the case, but it was certainly close. However, because the ref indicated that it was a goal originally, it would have taken some mighty strong evidence, that simply wasn’t there with the camera angles, to reverse it. And luckily, that’s exactly how it played out. Goal is good (and so are the Hockey Gods tonight). 5-4 Wings advantage.
The Wings are on a six game winning streak and now trail the Predators and the 5th spot in the Western Conference by a single point. The Predators are trailing Vancouver 2-0 tonight in the first period and have played two more games than the Wings. There are six games left in the season and the Red Wings picked a great time to get red hot.
